The Bishop’s Education Fund was created in 2012 in response to the number of families in need of tuition assistance but were ineligible to receive funds from the Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation (MLTF) due to their household income levels. MLTF awards tuition grants to students of qualifying families that attend a Catholic school in the Diocese of Sioux City. Receiving its initial funding from the Diocesan Annual Appeal, the Bishop’s Education Fund awards more than $200,000 each year to families who are active, registered parishioners within the 70+ parishes in the Diocese of Sioux City. However, it is still not enough. Current estimates show there is in excess of $10 million requested each year for tuition assistance. The Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation and The Bishop’s Education Fund can only provide a fraction of that amount.
The Bishop’s Education Fund also provides funding for parishes through a grant application process in which parishes can be reimbursed for efforts in evangelization, catechesis and parish revitalization. The purpose of the Bishop’s Education Grant for Parishes is to assist in the financing of Catholic parish-based evangelistic and catechetical efforts. Grant guidelines and the application can be found at https://scdiocese.org/bishops-education-grant-for-parishes.
